Founded in 1927 in Gothenburg, Sweden - Volvo began producing cars in earnest in the post-war years commencing with the PV444 that first introduced laminated glass. Later safety initiatives pioneered by Volvo include three-point safety belts that became standard on all new Volvos from 1959. In the 1960s Volvo also introduced crumple-zones, safety door locks and interia-reel seat belts. Having established a reputation for safety, Volvo also released their first sports car in 1961 - the P1800 manufactured until 1973.
Famous models include the 544, the 122, 144, 240 and 260 series, followed by the 360, 440 and later 7, 8 and 9 series. Volvo also established a reputation for turbocharged performance models in various body styles.
