Holden’s prestige Brougham and later, the Statesman - in both DeVille and Caprice variants - offered luxury buyers a local alternative to Ford’s best selling Fairlane, Chrysler’s VIP (and later Chrysler by Chrysler) as well as imported prestige marques such as Jaguar and Mercedes.
Offering an extended boot-line with the Brougham, and longer wheelbase with the Statesman - customers were spoiled for choice with a vast range of luxury options. A range of V8s were offered starting with the Chevy 307 and 350, to Holden’s own 253 and 308. Numerous power accessories and convenience items, stretching room for five and V8 performance meant relaxed interstate driving for the Statesman buyer. Holden went out with a bang with the final Statesman, the elegant and popular WB Caprice and Deville from 1980-85. The name was resurrected in the mid 90s and survived right up until Holden’s demise as a manufacturer in 2017.
