Starting out as the Swallow Sidecar Company in 1922, the name later abbreviated to S.S. Cars when it began manufacturing car bodies in the 1930s. Due to an unfortunate association with a certain Nazi unit, the owner William Lyons (later Sir William) changed the name to Jaguar after World War Two. Despite the earlier success of the fabulous SS100 sports car of the mid/late 1930s - it was the introduction of the stunning XK120 of 1948 that really established the Jaguar legend. Using the XK as the basis for racing cars, Jaguar won Le Mans four times in the 1950s including a hat-trick from 1955 to ‘57. The legendary XK series straight six was the basis for so many iconic Jaguar models including the beautiful XK sedans, Mark II and of course the incredible E-Type/XK-E coupe and convertible sports cars.
Jaguar introduced a potent 5.3 litre V12 for 1971 that offered unrivaled levels of turbine-like smoothness and effortless power. The V12 was available in the series 3 E-Type, the XJ sedans and S-Type coupe that debuted as the E-Type replacement in 1975. Visit Tunnel Ram’s E-Type gallery
