Ford Fairlane - Australia's best selling luxury car for almost 30 years from its launch in 1967 with the ZA model. Initially offering styling lifted from the US Fairlane (Falcon midsection) Ford Australia got one up on Holden. Immediately establishing itself as the premier local luxury car, the Fairlane was a huge local success and big money spinner for the boys from Broadmeadows.
In 1972 Ford released the first locally designed Fairlane with the ZF. The following year, Ford fired another shot over Holden’s bows with the spare-no-expense, super luxury LTD. Based on the Fairlane but with unique front and rear styling - including hidden headlights - the LTD was the instant king of the local luxo barges. Longer, more powerful and oozing American style - the LTD was a hit, though the two door variant known as the Landau didn’t do so well and was quietly shelved in 1976.
