Introduced in 1967 and built on the Mustang platform, with hidden headlights, electric-razor style grille and matching, chrome ribbed tail lights, the Cougar was priced to sell upmarket. Initially only offered as a hardtop coupe, Mercury later released a convertible (though never offered as a fastback). Well equipped and with one of the nicest, most stylish interiors in all autodom, the Cougar was good looking and had enough performance options to satisfy muscle fans. With so much on offer, the Cougar was a success from the get-go. Engines ranged from a 2V 302 right on up to the brutal 428 Cobra-Jet V8 of 1969/70. Models include the GT, GT-E, XR-7 and Eliminator.
