Holden Commodore was GMH’s best seller for almost 40 years until local production ceased in 2017. Along the way it became not only Australia’s best selling car for decades, but also an Aussie touring car legend and multiple Bathurst winner. Holden equaled the record set by the HQ series with seven separate bodies all based on the same platform - long wheelbase Statesman, Commodore sedan and wagon, ute, one-tonner, crew cab and Monaro coupe.
Models covered here begin with the first Commodore introduced in 1978, the Opel Rekord-based VB, and on through to the VC, VK and VL models all based on the original body with numerous styling and engine changes. In 1988 Holden released the longer and wider VN also based on an Opel. Subsequent styling updates were reflected in model designations VP, VR and the VS last sold in 1997.
